The town of Dbaye, located on the Mediterranean Sea just to the north of Beirut, is home to a thriving commercial district. Raed Abillama Architects have designed a number of projects here, including a building that houses offices for Daikin, a leading manufacturer of air conditioning equipment.
The practice was commissioned to design the interiors of these offices, while subtly showcasing the company’s air conditioning systems and products. These became part of the ‘ceiling-scape’ – a layered surface in which these systems are apparent and visible, along with a series of sculpted, floating ‘clouds’, which include integrated lighting but also help to soften the acoustics of the working spaces. Walls are in exposed concrete and floors in terrazzo, allowing this ceiling-scape to stand out in a prominent manner.
The offices as a whole include meeting rooms, open plan working areas and more contained spaces, as well as a reception room. Glass partitions lightly separate these zones, while enhancing the perception of volume overall as well as allowing light to circulate. Colorful bookcases and filing units add a more playful note with these and other vivid elements, such as the reception desk, singing out against a more neutral backdrop.
