With its combination of green architecture and sustainable landscaping, this new hillside hamlet was designed in response to a competition organized by Benchmark for a site at Faqra Club in Kfertay. The setting is rural and tranquil, with the village at a height of 1720 metres, offering panoramic views of the mountains and, in the distance, the city of Beirut. The new community consists of a combination of villas, chalets and ‘townhouses’, sensitively positioned within the natural sloping topography of the hillside. The selection of different typologies and building scales gives the hamlet a more naturalistic quality, along with the positioning of each individual unit according to the views, access lanes and their relationship to neighbouring homes. Ample provision of open spaces and landscaping with drought tolerant plans and deciduous trees – which provide shade in the summer months – offers a verdant backdrop in keeping with the natural beauty and environmental conditions of the setting. The emphasis on sustainability continues with the palette of materials, with timber and stone explored in contemporary forms. The use of green roofs throughout the community further softens the impact of the hamlet within the landscape, while offering an organic source of insulation. Amenity spaces for residents include both indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a gym and outdoor recreational spaces.
